Pentecost Sunday
This weekend we celebrate the Solemnity of Pentecost. Since Vacan II, Pentecost marks the end of the Easter season. Pentecost, together with Easter and Christmas, constute the three most important holy days of the Church’s calendar. Our joy on these three holidays is so overwhelming that the Church would celebrate them for eight days, just as the Jewish people celebrate their most important holidays for eight days. These eight days are called an octave. Each of these eight days is celebrated as though it were the feast itself. As part of the changes made to the liturgical calendar following Vacan II, the Church suppressed the octave of Pentecost to keep the season of Easter to 50 days, from which Pentecost derives its name (Gr.: pentekoste hemera – fiftieth day). It was, perhaps, an unfortunate decision in that it’s unintended consequence was to diminish the significance of Pentecost. And so the Easter season that used to conclude with Trinity Sunday, the octave day of Pentecost, now ends on Pentecost Sunday.
To date, the Development Office has received pledges totaling $70,895 . This represents 95.8% of our $74,000 goal.
If you have already contributed for this year, we thank you for your generosity. If you have not, please prayerfully consider what you might be able to comfortably contribute. Every little bit helps. If every registered parishioner gave just $40, we would meet our goal. Because of the generosity of those who have already contributed, if every regular Mass attending family who has not yet donated this year gave just $40, we would meet our parish goal. For your convenience, envelopes have been inserted in this week’s Bulletin. They can be placed in the collection baskets, mailed to or left with the parish office, or mailed directly to the Diocese. To make giving a little easier, you can make a pledge and then pay it over time. Thank you in advance for your generosity. God bless
